There is a very simple and quick way to grow pepper seedlings, which does not involve any picking or timely watering.
It is based on the use of a wick for irrigation, and also eliminates picking. And since pepper is a hygrophilous plant, but delicate, with a sensitive root system, even the most careful dive can harm fragile roots. Seedlings react to such negative effects by stopping growth and development for an indefinite time. One of the options to avoid this course of events is a pick-free method of growing plants.
Advantages of the method
- The pick-free method with wick irrigation has several advantages:
- The soil in the tank is moistened through the wick independently, while the plants take the amount of moisture necessary for growth and development.
- Since the method does not involve diving, the roots will not be damaged during transplantation. Growing seedlings without picking, seeds can be sown several weeks later than with picking.
- Save time on a dive and control the level of humidity.
What is needed
You will need plastic 6-liter eggplants, which must be prepared as follows: cut so that the upper part with the neck, when it is placed in the lower part, does not touch the bottom. A small hole for the wick is made in the lid of the eggplant, which can be done using a strip of nylon pantyhose. Strip should be cut about a half centimeter wide, then pull it well to get a thin cord.
Algorithm for preparing materials and planting seedlings
One end of the cord must be inserted into the hole made in the lid, then inserted into the eggplant and screw the lid. The length should be such that when setting the top of the tank to the bottom, it reaches the bottom. Then you should install the wick in this position, for which, on the inside of the neck, fix it with small pieces of polystyrene foam, well-rammed. Then insert the top of the eggplant into the bottom.
Did you know? The owners feed some types of canaries with cayenne pepper so that their plumage acquires an intense red color.
From the same foam, make a small layer of drainage so that soil particles do not spill out through the hole made in the lid. Now you need to proceed to the land and seeds. Pour a layer of soil about 5-6 cm high, while the end of the wick must be held with a finger, after which it should be laid with a ring on the ground. Then continue to fill the soil, not reaching the edge of the tank about 5 cm. Tamp the surface slightly.
Immediately before sowing the seeds, moisten the contents of the eggplant well.. Spread dry seeds of peppers on the surface and sprinkle lightly with water from a spray bottle. And again lay a layer of soil about 2-3 cm, compact a little. In the process of seedling growth, it may be necessary to add soil; there is enough space for this in the tank.
Pour water into the bottom and add a few tablets of activated carbon. This is done in order to avoid acidification of water. And tighten the upper part with cling film in order to make a greenhouse.
All that remains is to wait for seedlings that will not keep you waiting. As soon as the first shoots appear, it is necessary to transfer the containers to the brightest place in the house. However, if there is not enough natural light, it is necessary to provide seedlings with additional illumination. Daylight hours for seedlings should not be less than 10 hours.
Did you know? Bulgarian pepper is called only in the countries of the former USSR. In English, it is known simply as pepper, in Europe it is called paprika. In Costa Rica, it's sweet chili (chile dulce), but in Egypt you can hear the name green pepper (filfil akhdar).
You can plant seedlings on the site when the earth warms up to +15 ... + 16 ° C. But it is not recommended to plant earlier than 60 days after seed germination. For planting in open ground, seedlings with 7-8 sheets and a height of at least 22 cm are suitable. The distance between the rows should be left about half a meter, and between the holes - at least 40 cm.
The future crop also depends on the seedling age. For example, 90-day-old seedlings will yield earlier fruits, but their number will be smaller. Before transplanting into open ground, seedlings need to be well watered. Planting should be at the same depth at which they grew eggplant. The method is very easy and not costly in terms of physical effort, but very effective. It is worth spending a little time to enjoy the rich pepper harvest for the whole family.
