Tyson Foods, the largest US meat processing plant, withdraws about 69,000 pounds of frozen, ready-to-eat chicken fillet, which may have been contaminated with metal.
This is the second time the factory recalls its products. The first was in January, when the company recalled 18 tons of Panko White Meat chicken pieces due to possible rubber contamination.
In this case, the product was recalled after the US Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reported two consumer complaints of foreign material in the Tyson chicken fillet, but no disease was reported at the same time. According to Tyson Foods and FSIS, products recalled in the first and second cases were manufactured at two separate facilities in Arkansas and Missouri. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is looking for ways to limit the number of such product reviews and recommends that food companies start internal investigations after receiving such complaints from customers, and respond more quickly to reviews.
Consumer advocates say that increasing automation in meat processing plants leads to more and more machine parts breaking down and thereby contaminating food.
