On Thursday, June 6, the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Dairy Industry, chaired by a member of the North Cornwall Parliament Scott Mann, presented its report to the British Parliament on the results of a year-long study of the dairy industry and surveys of dairy farmers throughout the country.
The parliamentarians wanted to understand what kind of support the dairy sector needed to continue export trade after Brexit.
The report said that, despite the availability of opportunities, the industry faces a number of problems.
The report details five key areas where the dairy sector will face problems after Brexit, such as: tariffs on trade, maintaining current standards, certification of animal health, increasing export potential and building relationships with new markets.
And the success of the dairy sector in building its export potential will depend on the successful management of these threats and opportunities, the solution of which will require state support.
In the UK, dairy production is the largest agricultural sector. Now in the country more than 25,000 people are employed in the milk processing sector, and another 50,000 people are directly employed at dairy farms.
