Over the past weekend, watermelons in Ukraine’s markets are twice as cheap as the Info-Shuvar analysts inform, based on data from their price monitoring of the largest wholesale markets in the country.
Farmers in the southern regions of Ukraine were shocked by the current price fall. Last week, they sent the first crop of watermelons at 10-12 UAH / kg (0.33-0.44 euro / kg) amid satisfactory demand.
And now, traders in Ukraine are ready to buy watermelons from the fields of the Kherson region at a price of 5.0-5.5 UAH / kg (0.16-0.18 euro / kg) and above.
A decrease in the cost of production was halved at the beginning of the week in the largest wholesale market in Western Ukraine, ORU “Shuvar” in Lviv, where today they are asking for 9.0-10.0 UAH / kg (0.30-0.33 euro / kg).
It is noteworthy that in 2018, watermelon in Ukrainian markets was even cheaper. Last year, domestic farmers significantly increased the area under the watermelon in film greenhouses, which served as a significant increase in supply in the markets, and Kherson farmers shipped watermelon at 1.2-1.5 UAH / kg (0.04-0.05 EUR / kg) .
Industry experts note that this year the areas under the early watermelon on the lands of the southern regions of Ukraine were cut, and under the “rainfed” watermelon - expanded. “Bogarny” watermelon will enter the country's markets after July 15.
