Wales' egg and poultry producers have a great future, and market trends indicate increased consumption.
Over the past ten years, consumer demand for eggs and poultry, especially chicken, has steadily increased. This is the result of consumers choosing to include more protein in their diets.
Nathan Ward, an analyst at research firm Kantar, says people buy more chicken than ever before. “Chicken made up 80% of all protein sales last year, and it’s becoming a big part of the range of foods people choose to buy,” he said.
In the organic poultry sector, growth was not as strong as in the traditional market. Although organic chicken sales have grown by 65% over the past five years, overall in the poultry sector this is equivalent to only a 1.3% increase in volume.
Meanwhile, the data show that over the past four to five years, egg consumption has increased by 5-6% per year. Forecasts suggest that demand will continue to grow.
“As a nation, we love eggs, people need products that can be cooked quickly and easily, and eggs are like that. Chicken and eggs win the battle for how they are used; they have a wonderful story to tell. There are many positive eggs and birds in the future, ”said Nathan Ward.
