In recent years, in Ukraine, a decrease in the number and severity of wireworms and false wireworms has been detected, however, according to the results of autumn surveys of last year, a significant density of the stock of pests that entered the winter was revealed.
This year, under favorable weather conditions and optimal moistening of the arable soil layer, non-observance of agrotechnical measures for growing and protecting crops, the formation of cells of high harmfulness of wireworm and false wireworm in most areas, especially in Polesie, is possible.
The main measures to limit the number of pests are: compliance with scientifically based crop rotation in crop rotations, fertilizer and tillage systems.
Nutcracker Beetle Larva
It is especially important to cultivate row-row cultivation of row crops during the June period of larvae and pupation, destruction of rhizome weeds, flaking of stubble crops, early autumn plowing, May loosening or plowing of vapors, and the introduction of aqueous ammonia.
It is also necessary to ensure sowing in the optimum time for the treated seeds, which will provide reliable protection of seedlings from soil pests. For information, wireworms are called the larvae of nutcracker beetles. They often infect potato tubers.
Biting into the tuber, they harm the young stems. Potato damaged by a larva grows poorly and its productivity decreases. The commercial value of such potatoes decreases, and fungi and bacteria get into the passages made by the wireworm, causing rot.
