In the Kherson region, the public association “Association of Kherson Watermelon Producers” was created, which was officially registered on July 31, 2019, as informed by the head of the Palicheva farm Yuri Palich on his Facebook page.
According to Yuri Palich, the creation of this association is a starting official step in order to register the geographical indication “Kherson watermelon”.
Palic explained that registration is needed to protect the reputation of local food.
It will contribute to the development of agriculture, will enable farmers to maintain a high price for their unique products and to fight unfair competition, which can mislead customers with products that may be poor or tasteless.
The farmer added that there is still a need to go through the specification, develop a logo, prepare and submit documentation for registration. In order for customers to be able to try Kherson Watermelon, it will take several more years, he predicts.
In addition, Yuri Palich proposed making a watermelon the coat of arms of the Kherson region. “It may be the symbol of New York a big apple,” the farmer writes.
