The melons and gourds of the Kherson region successfully survived the weather disasters, the director of the Southern experimental melon breeding station of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, in Volodymyr Lymar, reports.
According to him, some watermelon plantations were damaged by hail, but in general, a large amount of rainfall favorably affected them. Watermelons love moisture no less than the sun's rays.
Early varieties of watermelons will ripen in the horse of June. Agrarians are more worried about weather forecasts for the summer and early fall of this year. According to them, heavy rains are possible in the second half of August, and the first frosts are already in September. It was during this period that a massive harvest of watermelons occurred, which could negatively affect their quality.
Watermelons have not yet arrived at the markets of the Kherson region. While there are not even those that are grown under the film. At the same time, imported watermelons are already present in supermarkets, but there is little demand for them. Buyers complain about the quality of the overseas product: it is tasteless and watery.
For information, the NAAS Southern Research Station of Ukraine in the Golopristan district is already working on creating a watermelon that will be resistant to elevated temperatures.
It is expected that the watermelon will have a red core and will not stop the growing season at temperatures up to 47 ° C. In the work on the new variety, the best varieties of watermelon from Asia, the USA and Korea are used. It will be possible to see a new heat-resistant watermelon on sale no earlier than 2020.
